Can we improve recovery following severe spinal cord injury in dogs?
VSA is launching a new clinical trial investigating the use of riluzole in dogs with severe spinal cord injury.
Despite substantial research into canine intervertebral disc extrusion (IVDE), dogs presenting without deep pain perception remain a significant clinical challenge, with many failing to regain independent ambulation.
Riluzole is a drug with potential neuroprotective properties that has been investigated in human spinal cord injury, but has not been investigated in canine spinal cord injury.
Our study aims to investigate whether riluzole, administered alongside standard treatment, may improve recovery of ambulation in dogs with severe thoracolumbar IVDE.
Referral criteria:
Dogs with suspected thoracolumbar intervertebral disc extrusion (IVDE)
Paraplegia with suspected loss of deep pain perception
Presenting within 24 hours of the first clinical signs
Confirmation of eligibility:
All referred dogs will be assessed by the Neurology Service at VSA Auckland West. Enrolment will require confirmation of absent deep pain perception by a veterinary neurologist and a diagnosis of IVDE using advanced imaging (CT or MRI).
