VSA Surgical Residency Programme

This programme will follow the guidelines of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and successful completion of the programme will allow the resident to sit the examinations to become a Diplomate of ECVS. Candidates are expected to have previously completed a recognised rotating internship in small animal veterinary medicine.

The position will be 36 months rotating through the specialist surgical services at the VSA hospitals in Auckland West and Sylvia Park, Auckland and, occasionally, at our VSA hospital in Christchurch. 

The residents will be expected to fully participate in case management, perioperative surgical care, and assist with after hours care of cases in the hospitals. Attendance at regular journal club, case rounds and local seminars is expected.  

In order the fulfil ECVS credential requirements, among other things, the residents will be required to design, prepare, complete and present a research project for publication in a peer-reviewed veterinary journal. The residents will also be required to present a series of current veterinary topics at national and international conferences.
