Dr Ryan Philips

Position: Surgical Registrar

Ryan graduated from Massey University in 2016 and began his veterinary career in a busy mixed animal practice in South Canterbury, New Zealand. Over six years, he developed a strong clinical foundation, gaining extensive experience across a diverse range of medical and surgical cases.

As his passion for surgery grew, Ryan developed a particular interest in small animal surgery and pursued advanced training to further refine his skills. In 2022, he undertook a small animal surgical internship at VSA, where he continued to develop his clinical and surgical expertise, gaining experience across a broad range of soft tissue and orthopaedic procedures.

Alongside the intensity of internship training, Ryan completed his Master’s dissertation on meningoencephalomyelitis in dogs in New Zealand. He successfully fulfilled the requirements for his Master’s degree while also contributing to peer-reviewed publications in well-regarded veterinary journals.

Ryan’s dedication to surgical excellence and continued professional development led to his acceptance into a small animal surgical residency at VSA in 2023. Throughout his residency, he further developed his clinical and academic expertise, continuing to publish multiple journal articles and presenting his work at both national and international conferences. His clinical interests encompass all aspects of small animal surgery, with a particular focus on soft tissue surgery. His commitment to surgical excellence led to his appointment as a small animal surgical registrar in July 2026, an important milestone on his path towards specialist qualification in small animal surgery.

Outside of his professional life, Ryan values time with his family and the balance it brings. He enjoys fly fishing, tramping, and getting outdoors with his dog, Luna. Most importantly, he treasures spending time with his wife, Finja, and their children.
